EDF National Vase Tavistock 20 Devonport Services 27 TAVISTOCK exited the vase at the hands of Devonport Services at Sandy Park on Saturday and although beaten should feel proud that they held their opponents from a higher league to within one score. The first half was a closely contested affair with Tavistock camped deep in Devonport territory for long periods of time and if they had converted that pressure more effectively the game may have been theirs. As it was the teams turned around level at half time eight points all. Devonport went in front with a Matt Anstis penalty but Tavistock struck back almost immediately with a score of their own. After intense pressure by the Tavistock forwards the ball was moved first one way then the other by the backs and a gap was created for fly half Josh Sutton to claim a try. Tavistock then went ahead with a penalty goal from Sutton only for Devonport to equalise with a try from Steve Hillman. Devonport took control after half-time with two tries; the first when Ed Court went around the Tavistock cover and the second when Kyle Brown broke two tackles to score between the posts. Anstis converted both scores. Tavistock then hit back and a sweeping move saw Dave Goodspeed held close to the line but the supporting Doug Lloyd backing up accepted the pass to grab the try. Devonport then went back on the attack and secured the game with a second try from Kyle Brown. As the final whistle approached Tavistock continued to build up the pressure and after a move involving both backs and forwards fly half Josh Sutton provided the pass from which Duncan Law scored, Sutton converted. l This weekend Tavistock travel to Newquay for a Cornwall and Devon League fixture, kick off 3pm.
