AN APPLICATION for new houses on an Okehampton estate has provoked objections from existing residents because of an increase in density.

The site is the last area of undeveloped land on the residential estate at Fern Meadow known as 'The Chase' which currently consists of ten bungalows.

Sylvan Developments has applied for permission to construct six two/three storey four-bedroomed houses and associated garages.

Twenty letters of objections have been received by the planning authority from residents on the estate who are concerned that the dwellings are out of keeping with the rest, visually intrusive and too high a density. The proposal represents an increase in density of 10 houses per hectare.

Planning officers said the case was not clear cut because there was no specific guidance within planning policy as to how a situation presented by this application, ie an increase of density within an existing low density estate, should be addressed.

The proposal is in lieu of four approved two-storey three bedroomed dwellings.

Planners at their meeting on Monday voted to hold a site meeting before determining the application.
