Okehampton paid tribute to the three victims of the Royal Navy helicopter crash as the town marked Remembrance Sunday (November 8) with its traditional parade and church service.

This year is particularly poignant as it is the first Remembrance Sunday since a Royal Navy helicopter crashed in nearby Sourton this June, killing all three crew members and deeply affecting the Okehampton community.

The annual Remembrance display in the window of Donald’s Menswear was dedicated this year to Lieutenant Commander Chris Gayson, Lieutenant Lily-Mae Fisher and Petty Officer Owen Green, and a poppy wreath was laid at the war memorial in memory of the trio.

The day’s commemorations also included the Remembrance parade, which saw councillors, members of the Armed Forces, veterans, cadets, emergency workers, representatives of other community groups and members of the public walk up to All Saints Church to participate in a special service and lay wreaths in honour of those who lost their lives in service to their country.

The commemorations began with the roll call, followed by the Ode of Remembrance. Members of the community observed a two-minute silence. The Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band played The Last Post and Reveille. After the wreaths were laid, a full church service was held before the parade returned to Fore Street for the march past.

Refreshments were then available at the Royal British Legion’s club on Station Road.
