WITH regard to the naming of the new bridge on Drakes Trail. Although designed by Brunel and acknowledged to be one of his finest creations (which didn't stop it being demolished in the 1960s, alas) the original viaduct across the Walkham Valley and built to carry the railway — which was the reason for the transport corridor being there in the first place — was actually called Walkham Viaduct and known locally as Grenofen Viaduct.
Although a somewhat tacit link to the area, Gem Bridge does acknowledge a mine in the vicinity, however, it seems to me a nod to the great man is more than appropriate in this case by giving the structure his name. But as happened before it will probably end up being called Grenofen Viaduct once again!
