PEOPLE in Devon want more decisions taken locally, the area?s prospective parliamentary Liberal Democrat told a national radio audience. (Times, July 29).
Quite right too. But why is it Liberal Democrat policy to support the New Labour policy of the abolition of local government by county councils and replacing them with regions? In Devon?s case this would mean the whole area between Bristol and the Scillies. That does not sound local to me.
As far as I know, the only political parties who are against regionalisation are the Conservative party and UKIP.
If you believe ?There will always be an England, and England will be free? don?t listen to such tongues on national radio. Once England is Balkanised there will no longer be an England and England will not be free. Nor will we be governed locally.
