Despite a disappointing start to carnival week, with organisers Tavistock Lions Club having to cancel the fun day in the Meadows due to bad weather, it was still believed to be a successful week.
Many people filled the town hall to watch a number of young bands at a concert organised by Jude Rotten on behalf of the Lions Club, and a similarly popular folk night was held in the Tavy Club.
The pavement artist competition was held again with more than 30 children showing off their artistic skills on the pavement of Duke Street and the annual concert in the church saw the congregation entertained by the Tavistock College Jazz band and others.
Steve Grummitt, Lions Club spokesman, said: 'Overall, it was a great week. It started off a bit disappointing as we had to cancel the fun day but at the time the weather was so bad and the Meadows was waterlogged, but fortunately the rest of the week went to plan.
'The weather was kind for carnival day on Saturday. There was a sea of red, white and blue as the theme was Great Britain. The procession was led by Adam Tofield and his Olympic torch, who was part of the Olympic relay, followed by the rest of Tavistock Athletic Club, carrying a large Union flag, and then the Swaziland athletes who were very popular and received lots of support from the crowds.
'There was a fantastic London bus built by the Old School Children's Centre which won the best in procession and best in the artistic class.
'It was a great atmosphere and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it. Big thanks to the event sponsors, the companies that advertised in carnival week and to everyone who supported us.'
The street collection was £250 up on last year making it more than £2,000 which will go to various charity groups, clubs and schools.
Next year's carnival day will be held on Saturday July 25, and the Lions Club is looking for suggestions for next year's theme. Anyone who has a suggestion should send it to the Lion's Club care of the Union Inn.
