STUDENTS at Tavistock College have chosen a new team of senators, following a challenging election campaign.
Candidates went through a selection process where they were interviewed by the student presidents and put to the vote.
Teacher Eva Pearson, who organised the senate, said those who put themselves forward were set a task which tested their ability to work on their own and with a team.
'They had to produce a press campaign and give a speech to each year group before being passed to the public vote to decide on the new team,' she said.
The student presidents were interviewed by governors, Mrs Pearson and director of sixth form Phil Mathieson, to decide who was suitable for the positions available.
The senate has always had a role in the college, previously in the form of the head boy and girl.
Mrs Pearson said the senate's role was to put across the students' voice and translate that into future accomplishments, as well as supporting the college's current policies and making it a better place.
'This allows the students' ideas to come alive, which makes them feel valued and shows them that they can make a difference to the college,' she said.
Previous senates began the campaign for the creation of the new sports facilities and running track, which are now available for the whole community. Others went out to primary schools to work with future college students to create art work to welcome visitors.
Senators were also instrumental in getting a new, large water fountain for students and have worked with the refectory on pricing.
Senator Jacob Smith said: 'Being elected as a student president was pretty cool, especially in a year which has seen the completion of such a grand project as the new running track.'
'My aims are to improve not only the college experience of the students, but also help some departments which are in need of improvements students could instigate.'
The senate works as a team and has a rota to ensure all members experience chairing the weekly meetings, preparing an agenda and booking rooms. Minutes and actions are displayed around the college.
The body is comprised of four senators from Years 7 to 9, four from Years 10 to 12, two student presidents and four vice-student presidents from Year 13, and two student council co-ordinators.
