THERE seems to be a growing trend for motorists in Tavistock to park on the pavement without any good reason.
I can understand that there may be circumstances where this is desirable, for example on a busy main road which is not really wide enough for a parked car and two articulated lorries to pass each other, and no other parking nearby is available.
If I thought my car was in danger, I might consider it myself, but I would not then be considering the counter arguments: parking on the pavement 1) is illegal and 2) an eyesore, 3) will restrict usable width (can a mother and double buggy get past or will she, worst case scenario, have to push her buggy into the road to get around the car?) and 4) may damage the tarmac or paving stones, producing a further hazard for pedestrians. Do drivers who park on the pavement consider all of these?
Recently there has been a rash of pavement parking in St David?s Road, being a cul-de-sac with relatively little traffic and low speeds because of properly parked vehicles and bends. I find this incomprehensible ? perhaps someone can enlighten me on this growing trend.
