TAVISTOCK'S Kate Allenby has been included in the British squad for the modern pentathlon World Championships in July.

British team manager, Dominic Mahoney, announced last week that all four would compete in the individual event.

'But no decision has yet been made as to whose scores will count towards the team event. That decision will be made on the first day of the championships, following the training camp,' said Mr Mahoney.

Kate said she was 'quietly confident' of a place on the team event.

Kate finished in fifth place at the European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria last week, just missing out on a medal.

'I had an average shoot and my fencing was not spectacular — it just wasn't my day,' said Kate, 'But I was really pleased with my swim. I did that in only one second less than my time at the Olympics last year, but with six months' less training!'

Kate also said that she had a good horse ride, but was 'absolutely shattered' when it came to the start of the final 3,000m run, at the start of which she was in fourth place.

During the race she just failed to catch the competitor who took the bronze medal overall, and was overtaken by the Belarussian Janna Shubenok who usurped her fourth place.

'I was only using the championships as a training competition, but I will have to go back to the drawing board slightly with regard to fencing,' said Kate, who is still aiming to regain full fitness after her recent spate of injuries.

'Overall I am pleased with the way things went,' she said.

The World Championships take place at Millfield School in Street, Somerset from the 16-22 July and details are on http://www.pentathlon.co.uk">www.pentathlon.co.uk

Steph Cook, Georgina Harland and Sian Lewis, who won the team relay at the European championships, have also been included in the British squad.

'I want everyone to come along with their Union Jacks and face paints to support us,' said Kate.
