WEST Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett will be visiting Winkleigh next week to hear residents? concerns about a proposed biomass power plant on the old airfield to the west of the village.

Mr Burnett will be attending a public meeting taking place in the village hall next Thursday (August 28), at 5.30pm.

The £37-million 23MW biomass gasification plant is the brainchild of Roger Barton, of Chumleigh-based Peninsula Power.

A shop in South Street, Winkleigh, was opened last week to give the public access to information about the project.

This is in addition to the Winkleigh Village Community Working Party, which comprises members of the parish council, businesses and residents of Winkleigh.

David Lawson, secretary of the Winkleigh Society, is due to meet Geoff Bateman, who is Devon manager with the Environment Agency, next week to discuss residents? concerns about the proposed power station.

Mr Lawson said opponents of the scheme, were not against ?green? power, but felt there were a number of disadvantages with the Winkleigh scheme.

?We are very concerned not to put back the development of renewables in the UK, but the means chosen must be effective and developed in an appropriate place.

?This is why we feel it right to pursue this matter with some force at this stage.

?Failure to get it right at the outset will cause unhelpful national publicity and a waste of public resources,? he said.
