I WRITE to support the proposal submitted in his letter to the Okehampton Times by Gerry Stephens that revised proposals for Simmons Park should be discussed at a public meeting.

It was clear from the outset that the original plan was extremely ambitious and would meet opposition from Lottery funding administrators. They see on a day-by-day basis projects which begin with a flood of enthusiasm (which always fades) leaving a financial mess in its wake.

Top class sports facilities in a small town such as ours are simply a luxury which is not affordable. We are so well provided for in most respects and maybe should settle for that which is within reason.

Council tax payers paid £10 per head on sport/recreation during 1998-1999, probably more in 1999-2000. West Devon spend no money on sports grounds, parks or open spaces and I have been informed by their principal corporate accountant that the high figures quoted are due to money spent on Okehampton and Tavistock swimming pools.

The heavy subsidies in place for these facilities can only increase if plans to proceed with unrealistic schemes go ahead.

Possibly most council tax payers would be happy to meet increased payment. Others may not wish to so do. At least a public meeting with full discussion would enable everyone to express their point of view.

In theory, a large sum of money from the sale of the town car park site is available. This should permit many improvements to the town.

To launch into an elaborate sports scheme which stands little or no chance of being sustainable requires the full endorsement of council tax payers. Let common-sense prevail.
