A PAT on the back for policies relating to disability was given to West Devon Borough Council this week.
The authority was presented with a Positive about Disabled People certificate by the Employment Service which means it can display a special symbol marking its commitment to employing people with disabilities.
Cllr John Darch, chairman of the personnel sub-committee, said: 'Use of this symbol will indicate to citizens and staff alike that West Devon Borough Council is fair and just in its dealings with all sectors of the community.'
The council made policy commitments before being granted use of the Positive about Disabled People symbol. They included interviewing all applicants with a disability who meet minimum criteria for a job vacancy; discussing with disabled employees what can be done to develop their abilities; making efforts to ensure employees stay in post if they become disabled; and ensuring council employees develop awareness of disability.
The presentation was at the council's Okehampton offices.
