LIBERAL Democrat MP for South East Cornwall, Colin Breed met the head of Ginsters on Saturday to discuss the possibility of giving the Cornish pasty protected regional status. Regional protected status is an EU initiative to stop locally produced foodstuffs being imitated by non-local brands cashing in on the popularity of a region?s produce. In the past, this has been applied to Cornish clotted cream, Newcastle Brown Ale and Melton Mowbray Pork Pies. Mr Breed wants to make sure the Cornish pasty is next in line for protection. He said he wants Brussels to take notice of what Cornwall has contributed to the world in terms of food. ?The Cornish pasty, as a great Cornish achievement, needs to be protected as clotted cream already has been. Obtaining protected status for the Cornish pasty would be a massive boost for the regional economy.?
