THE old railway line track between Burdon Lane, Highampton and the former Hole station, some 1,200 yards, has been expensively tarmacadamed. I understand that new gates at each end will be padlocked to keep out cars.

Apparently EU and Lottery money has been made available. However, this will have had to be match-funded by Devon County Council and we get back from the EU about half our membership fee of over £12-billion a year.

Council tax has risen by 18% because Devon County Council claims that it has not received enough money from the government to fund its services adequately.

Forestry track roads and the Tarka Trail survive without tarmac surfacing. Surely our public roads for motor vehicles should have greater priority for upkeep and maintenance?
