THE Tavistock Golf Club team of Alan Gawman, James Ruth and Graham Ruth won the English Golf Union Champion Club Championship at Sandwell Park in the Midlands, the first time a club from Devon has won this prestigious event.

The team now go to Glyfada in Athens to represent England in the European Champion Club event in early November.

Saturday September 25 saw the annual Charity Day with this year?s charities, nominated by this year?s captain, Peter Masoli, being the Radio Devon Chestnut Appeal and Cerebra.

The team of club vice president, Dennis Greening, Mervyn Francis and David Williams won the day?s golf with 81 points ? events contributing to the running charity total of £2,000. This will be added to the monies already raised which will be distributed to the charities shortly. Thanks were given to everyone who took part on the day.

The Sunday saw the annual Dartmoor Trophy for mixed pairs take place this year at Tavistock. The home team finished fifth, the event won by Teign Valley, 228 points, with Wrangaton on 225 second.

The Freeman Cup on September 12 was won by Geoff Gibbon from Mike Beveridge on count back after both shot net 66.

The monthly weekend stableford, division one, was won by Rick Harrison with 42 points, division two by Will Spearing, 40, and division three by Toby Mayne, 42.

The midweek medal on September 29 saw Brian Tillyer win with a net 64 from F Lawrence with a net 66.

Last Saturday Tavistock hosted the annual Three Captains? match between Tavistock, Yelverton and Bigbury. A competitive day in difficult conditions saw Yelverton retain the trophy by 8 points from Tavistock, with Bigbury third. Gary Hawking of Yelverton won the individual prize and Gary with his playing partners Alan Gawman and Gerry Saunders the best ?3? with 98 points.
