THE culmination of a year of celebrations takes place next week, with the final event in commemoration of the 900th anniversary of Tavistock?s market charter. The free concert by the popular group Lammas takes place in Tavistock Parish Church on Tuesday December 13. The group, which started off the celebration year with a hit concert in January, has been invited back to perform Sing We Yule, a seasonal celebration of Christmas with medieval music and words played on authentic instruments. Iain Andrews, chairman of the Tavistock Charter Group, said: ?2005 has been a very special year for celebrating the town?s two royal charters, the market charter granted in 1105 and the stannary charter 200 years later. ?We hope that some of the events we have created this year may well continue with other groups into the future and become part of the annual calendar of the town.? Thanks to a £20,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £10,000 from the town council, the charter group has helped organise a variety of events, ranging from letter boxing, an Easter egg rolling competition, photographic competition, musuem and art exhibitions, a medieval weekend in the Meadows and the publication of a market charter book. Events organiser Moira Andrews said: ?It seems to have been a very, very long two years of detailed planning and hard work, with more than just a little worry at times, but it was all worth it when you see the enjoyment the events have brought to all sections of the community.? The Lammas Concert starts at 7pm on Tuesday ? all are welcome.
