LIKE, I assume, most people I was touched by the pride in their country and the love and respect for their fellow man and shown by the Chilean people during their recent rescue of 33 miners trapped underground.
The following day, returning from shopping in the town and crossing the public area behind the supermarkets, I came across the damaged picnic tables and discarded bottles, crisp packets and other litter which had been strewn across one of the prettier spots in the town.
Does this tell us something of the respect that some people in this county have for their nation, for their town or for anything (including themselves) and should we just accept it as being a sign of the times?
