A WEST Devon man is appealing for public-spirited volunteers to get stuck in and help with some DIY canal-cleaning in Tavistock.
Mark Samson-Hill lives at Wheal Josiah but frequently visits the Meadows with his children.
The Times article last week about the weed-clogged and rubbish-laden state of Tavistock canal prompted Mr Samson-Hill to take action.
'For some time now I have been concerned about the state of the canal,' he said.
'It occurred to me that it wouldn't take much in the way of effort to get a group of people together with waders and wellies to do something about it — it's not rocket science after all.'
Mr Samson-Hill said he is happy to organise a canal clearing party and has already contacted Tavistock Town Council to see if it can help in any way.
'I just need people to give a day or half a day on a Saturday,' said Mr Samson-Hill.
Roger Howard, town clerk said: 'I think it's a brilliant idea.
'I'm sure if the councillors see that a group of community-minded people were coalescing to do something about the canal they would be delighted to support them in any way they can.'
Anyone who would be willing to take part in a canal-clean should contact Mark Samson-Hill on 01822 832937 or 01822 833032.
