A PROGRESS update on a new housing development proposed for Tavistock was reported to members of Tavistock Town Council last week.

Representatives of Bovis Homes and Walsingham Planning met with Tavistock town councillors last Tuesday (May 8) prior to the meeting of the development management and licensing committee to talk about the development planned for Callington Road.

Outline planning consent was granted in October 2015 for the construction of ‘up to 750 homes, a primary school site, a local convenience store, railway station associated development and associated infrastructure’.

The developers have been in discussion with West Devon Borough Council, the local planning authority, and said that they aim to submit a ‘reserved matters’ application for the construction of the first 150 houses within the next couple of months.

The reserved matters application will describe issues including the layout of the site, the design of the houses and the site’s infrastructure.

Chairman for the development management and licensing committee Cllr Paul Ward said: ‘Councillors were told that the first phase of the development will comprise a mixture of two and three storey houses and apartments each with parking for at least two cars. Additional parking spaces will be provided in dedicated lay-bys.

‘Access to the site will be from Callington Road along a new highway that will be wide enough for buses, emergency vehicles and delivery vehicles to pass. Smaller streets will branch off the main highway.

‘Space will be provided for a children’s play area, school site, and open green spaces.’

Cllr Ward added that the developers were taking account of feedback on their provisional plans prior to finalising the details and submitting the reserved matters application.

Councillors were not told when construction on the site might begin.
