CARADON planners have approved detailed plans for the construction of 66 golf lodges at St Mellion Golf Club following outline permission for a £100- million redevelopment project last year. The outline approval includes the building of 265 golf homes and a replacement hotel with 80 bedrooms, a new access to the site and reconfiguration of the golf course. Plans for the controversial new access to the north of the site, from the Viverdon Roundabout on the A388, have been deferred for County Highways officers to answer questions raised by members of the public. Local residents are concerns that golfers approaching from the south will not wish to drive the extra distance to the new access and will therefore increasingly use the village's narrow main street, which provides access to the school and church, as a 'rat -run'. The downgrading of a highway running through the site to Pillaton to a footpath and bridleway has been taken out of the scheme following local opposition.
