TAVISTOCK Town Hall was alive with melody last Wednesday when 450 children watched a vibrant performance of the Pied Piper. Pupils from Lamerton, Lifton, Mount House, Princetown and Whitchurch Schools interacted with the three actors from Openwide Theatre Company while they performed the historic tale. The London-based company even involved Tavistock mayor Caroline Keane during the performance — appearing on stage to a big round of applause. The play's plot sees Mayor Knight's wicked plan to overrun the town with rats, close the local primary school, convert it into loft apartments and make loads of money. But he gets more than he bargained for when the rats start gobbling up his crisp new bank notes. Who can help? Enter the Pied Piper. The event was fronted by Cllr Keane and organised by Tavistock Town Council. Cllr Keane said: 'I was thrilled to see how much fun the children were having as Openwide made a special point to include them in the play. Just to see the town hall used in this way for the young children and to feel the energy they bring into the hall was amazing. 'It's the best time I have had with children out of all the activities I do, and to see them enjoy themselves during Christmas time was brilliant.' David Evans, manager of Tavistock Town Hall, expressed thanks to the Original Pasty House for donating refreshments and to Tavistock College which loaned PE mats for the children to sit on. Cllr Keane expressed thanks to Mr Evans and his staff for all their hard work. Openwide is a charity theatre company which travels all over the UK and performs to schoolchildren. In July next year the company will visit Cotehele to perform 'The Pied Piper' for the public.
