DARTMOOR Railway presented their petition with nearly 2,000 signatures showing the support for a regular commuter service on the existing railway line between Okehampton and Exeter.

The petition document presented to the borough which has 1,950 names also has comments by people reinforcing their support for the scheme.

The petition was presented on Monday, at Okehampton railway station by John Hummel, managing director and David Payne, general manager of Dartmoor Railway, to Cllr Nick Morgan, chairman of the economic, leisure and community development committee.

John Love, local authority and community liaison manager for the railway said: 'It is very much hoped that West Devon Borough Council will support this obvious need in the Okehampton area in its entirety, which includes two new stations.'

The only land which is believed to be suitable for a parkway station at Okehampton East is now up for sale — and Dartmoor Railway hopes the council will help to ensure the railway can secure the land enabling the project to go ahead.
