LAST Wednesday saw the final event of the Okehampton Cycle Club summer time trial series on the old A30 road from Bridestowe to Lewdown and back. With a fine dry evening a field of 13 cyclists from Okehampton and Tavistock turned up to try and finish the series on a high note with a fast time. Peter Branfield was fastest on the night, clocking a time of 27.14, closely followed by Ashley Cackett on 27,19 and Andrew Carling was third with 27.58. Full results: P Branfield 27.14; A Cackett 27.19; A Carling 27.58; Jacky Rice 29.04; J Short 29.13; M Cory 29.17; D Pearce 29.22; C McKenzie 29.45; M Rice 29.59; T Bridgman 30.17; N Wlliams 30.37; C Treaise 32.48; Sharon Pitts 34.05. Well done to Andrew Carling, Jon Short, Chris Treaise, Tim Bridgman and Sharon Pitts for posting new personal best times on this course. The final event also settled the series with Jacky Rice the winner topping the table with 62 points, closely followed by Steve Podd on 60 points. Mike Cory was third on 54 points. At the post-race meeting Robert Szembek, the club chairman, said it had been another successful summer series with more local cyclists than ever participating this year. Colin Mackenzie on behalf of Tavistock Wheelers thanked Okehampton CC, the marshals and timekeeper for putting on the series and allowing them to participate. Club members were active last Sunday taking part in the 25-mile time trial hosted by North Devon Wheelers on the A377 road from Kings Nympton Station to Bishops Tawton and back. Phil Haygarth was fastest club member on 1.06.53 followed by Mike Rice 1.07.34, Jacky Rice 1.09.41 and Nigel Williams 1.11.10. Spare a thought for Jacky Rice, who on a fast time was held up for several minutes by a herd of cows. Although this deprived her of the ladies? top spot, she took the second ladies? prize.
