A FIVE mile walk to Hingston Down at Chilsworthy on April 18 crosses the territory where in the year 838AD, independent Cornishmen failed to resist the spread of the Saxons of Wessex.

Walking on pavements, minor roads, country lanes and heathland the general terrain is fairly flat and easy and time allows a short stop for a picnic lunch. The event is being organised by the Calstock Footpath Society.

Besides being an important battle site, Hingston Down was worked from at least the 17th century and rich copper deposits were discovered in the 1880s. Significant quarrying is still carried on at the site.

Walkers are asked to meet at Gunnislake Station's free car park on Saturday at 9.45am to coincide with the 8.57am Tamar Valley Line train from Plymouth, allowing participants to return to Plymouth on the 13.45 from Gunnislake. Strong shoes or boots are recommended.  Non members of the Society are requested to donate £2.
