THE Okeford Veterinary Centre Braveheart award for 2008 has gone to an extra special dog, who has fought her way through a number of illnesses and operations.
Seven-year-old Jack Russell Terrier Patch Smith won the hearts of Okehampton when she overcame major surgery to remove her leg, despite other ongoing medical conditions.
Patch's tragic tale began in 2003 when she was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. Over the next four years she suffered from bouts of the hair loss condition gastro-enteritis.
In 2008 Patch's leg had to be amputated after a severe epileptic fit, which left her front leg damaged, leaving her unable to feel and the inability to bear weight.
Four months later Patch returned with an infection of her uterus, which had to be removed under general anaesthetic.
Patch is now the proud owner of three strong legs and a thick coat of hair, which all grew back and has been awarded the Katie Bater Memorial Cup and a framed picture.
