PARKINSON'S disease sufferers and their carers may have more support in East Cornwall in future.

A drop-in event is being held in Callington Town Hall on October 23 to raise awareness and let people know of the support that is available.

Kay Lillie, Parkinson's UK information and support worker for the Southwest, said:?'There will be lots of organisations there — this is a very big area with nothing at the moment.

'Volunteers from the Mid-Cornwall branch of the charity have held awareness days at the Tesco stores in Launceston and Callington to promote the event and sign up recruits for a new East Cornwall branch of the charity.'

Sue Whipps, who organises the YOPS (Young Onset Parkinson's group), said: 'Our aim is to support the needs of people with Parkinson's who are still working. Being at Tesco has been very useful to meet people with ordinary lives and who don't know what support exists.'

Treasurer for the Mid-Cornwall branch John Whipps, himself a Parkinson's sufferer, said: 'Parkinson's UK did a huge amount to support me when I was first diagnosed, and I am now giving back.'
