RESIDENTS in Tavistock's Dolvin Road, left with nowhere to park their cars after the construction of the town's ring road, are to be given secure parking in the Abbey Rise car park.

Residents were promised a solution when the new road system was installed in 1995, and now West Devon Council is honouring its pledge.

The three residents who have lived there since 1985 will be allocated one specific space each at the eastern end of the Abbey Road car park for as long as they live in Dolvin Road.

Eight further spaces will be set aside for other residents. All eleven spaces will be separately designated, coloured and cordoned off.

Residents without on-site or specifically reserved car parking will continue to be offered, on an annual basis, free permits for the Abbey Road or Brook Street car parks.

Councillors on the policy and resources committee agreed to make the Brook Street and Abbey Rise car parks 'secure' and pay for the requisite measures to obtain this accreditation from the sale of the Abbey Garage site.

Although the project working group will consider whether the measures can be brought forward and uncoupled from the sale of the garage.
