YOUR otherwise excellent ? and thought provoking ? front page article of last week (June 15), about the Tavistock Town Council and clergy, contains one serious misrepresentation. Mr Howard is quite wrong to refer to any ?replacement? for Preb John Rawlings. No successor or replacement has yet been found: the post is vacant. Closely relevant to this is the fact that authority at St Eustachius now rests entirely and completely with our two splendid churchwardens Mr John Saxon and Mrs Lesley Morris. Strictly speaking, no executive action regarding parish matters should be taken by anyone ? even including assigned and co-opted clergy ? without the positive approval and acceptance of the chrchwardens: they are appointed by the diocesan bishop and are the representatives of us parishioners.
