THE new successful project that helps people in West Devon become more active has now set its sites on individuals over 55. The 5X30 project derives its name from health research that recommends people should do 30 minutes of physical activity at least five times a week. In order to provide an activity for people over 55, the project has supported Tavistock Area Support Services with two grants to help develop a table tennis club. The club will be launched at the Anchorage Centre, starting on Thursday, February 1 from 2pm to 4pm, with Lorraine Robinson from Okehampton Table Tennis Club overseeing the sessions. Kate Wright, Tavistock community activator for the 5X30 project, said: 'I am delighted to see this new activity starting in Tavistock for people over 55. 'Most people have played table tennis at some stage and to have a coach in attendance will make the sessions more fun and people can learn new skills.' Andy Lyle, manager of TASS, said: 'These are wonderful grants which will make a huge difference to people in Tavistock who enjoy table tennis, allowing them to take part in a relaxed session with a qualified coach.' The sessions are planned to run on the first and third Thursday of the month. Transport can be provided for people in outlying areas in order to access the activity and for people to attend exercise and movement classes at the centre.
