TWO 70-year-old women from West Devon will pound 26.2 miles of pavement while wearing brightly decorated bras in aid of breast cancer charities.

On May 13, friends Libby Watson and Jenny Norman will be taking part in the Moonwalk 2017 — a midnight walking marathon through the streets of London

Organised by Walk the Walk — the largest grant making breast cancer charity in the UK — the event draws in thousands of men and women each year, armed in flamboyant bras and costumes.

Libby, from Sticklepath, and Jenny, from Okehampton, first did the walk together in 2004. This year they will be taking part to raise funds for the charity as well as remember friends who have sadly lost their battle with breast cancer.

Libby said: ‘A few friends of mine have had breast cancer and some have sadly died from it. This is why I want to take part again, to help raise money for a charity that helps those battling with breast cancer.’

Libby and Jenny will be repeating something they achieved 12 years ago when they completed the walk with a group of women, including friends Brenda Tombs and Kath Matthews, who were both 70 at the time.

Now attaining that age themselves, Libby and Jenny have set themselves the challenge to also complete the 26.2-mile walk.

Libby said: ‘Jenny and I first met when we did the Moonwalk together many years ago and our friendship has continued since then. We both took part for two consecutive years in London, then Brenda and I volunteered as helpers the following year. Jenny and I then took part in the Edinburgh Moonwalk in 2007 and 2008 and the last walk we did was nine years ago!’

‘We’ve been busy training and getting into good shape! I’ve been walking all over Devon in preparation. It’s a very long walk but the atmosphere and buzz of the night help to pull you through those last few miles.

‘While it’s a great atmosphere, the Moonwalk is also a very moving occasion. Lots of people who take part have either had breast cancer themselves, have lost somebody because of it or know somebody who’s currently fighting it.’

Libby and Jenny said they hoped to raise £1,000 for the Walk the Walk charity.

Walk the Walk is a grant making charity, which means that everybody taking part in the challenges is raising money that will be granted to various breast cancer charities and charitable organisations which help people suffering with breast cancer and their families.
