OKEHAMPTON Otters Swimming Club paid another visit to Millfield School's superb 50m indoor pool.

The event was Street and district's open sprint meet. The team of eight swimmers contested a variety of strokes, all in the distance of 50m against clubs from bigger towns and cities with many coming from Wales.

Unfortunately, due to technical problems in the morning session no results were available for the swimmers who did not make it into finals.

Jenny Rice swam in the 17/over age group and again excelled. She swam personal best times to make it into three finals. In the fly with pbs in the heat and final she came away with bronze medal.

In the breast, which she rarely swims, but is improving all the time, she finalled again to bring home another bronze.

The best swim of the day from the team came in the final of the free. Here she listened to advice from her coach and made a good start, putting pressure on the fastest qualifier right down to the touch. Jenny swam under 30 seconds in a 50m pool. .This placed her second.

Jo.Cade made it into the final of the 15/16 years back. She swam again to a consistant level with a place of fifth being the reward for her swims.

The boys were not to be outdone. Eleven-year-olds Matthew Westlake and Alex Wooldridge between them gained three final berths.

Alex was the more successful with finals in the fly and breast. In the fly he finished in eighth place and in the breast fifth.

Matthew was seventh in his backstroke.

Jenny also gained three senior club records from her swims.

In total, 16 pb swims were attained by all the swimmers. They were Gavin Best free and fly, Holly Dennis free and back, Cameron Huxtable free and back , Hayley Jones free and fly, Jenny Rice free, breast and fly x 2 , Matthew Westlake free and back x 2 and Alex Wooldridge free.

The entry times were entered from a 25m pool — this is generally a quicker time because of the turn. Most of the times above were pb swims in a 50m pool, so credit must go to all of the swimmers for doing so well.

Thanks were expressed to the parents and assistant coach Robert Aubrey and coach Nigel West for their vocal support during the day.

The club's next targets are in the Devon Championships to see if they can repeat last year's tremendous results.
