GUY Watson, the successful organic farmer who founded Riverford Farm, Buckfastleigh, will hit out at supermarket practices when he speaks in Tavistock on November 15.

He is to be the guest speaker at the annual meeting of Tavistock and District Conservation Project at the Alexander Centre.

Mr Watson said he would be talking mainly about the principles and practice of organic farming, but expected to be asked about supermarkets and their systems.

He said it was 'incredible' that a recent government report had cleared them of all the charges against them and that their trading practices were unfair. 'They are acting against the interests of both their suppliers and their customers by trying to keep them apart,' he said.

TDCP, a charity which aims to improve the environment in and around Tavistock, was one of the first customers of Riverford Farm in the early 1990s. Riverford is one of the largest organic producers, with more than 500 acres under production. TDCP is an outlet for the Riverford Box Scheme, which delivers organic vegetables to consumers.
