MIXED success has been recorded in the fight to preserve two community activities in Bere Alston.

The Lighthouse Youth Club in Bere Alston has recently been wound up, but Bere Alston Carnival seems to have avoided this fate after villagers rallied round and offered their support for the carnival at a meeting called by the committee.

The carnival, which was revived nine years ago, has become a popular annual event, which ensured a good turnout at a crisis meeting in Bere Alston on February 21. The date for this year?s Bere Alston carnival has been set for Saturday, May 3, a fun-day will take place in the village on Monday, May 5.

The Lighthouse Youth Club in Bere Alston met at the United Church on Thursday and Friday nights, and at the height of its popularity catered for 100 children.

There remained a demand for the facility but due to increased commitments long-standing leader Rob Hember had to step down, and a successor could not be found.
