A DECISION on a scheme to create a footpath and cycle route through Okehampton's historic Old Mill site has been put on hold until the new year.
Members of West Devon Borough Council's policy and resources committee voted last week against allocating £90,000 to the project at this stage.
It was agreed that the Old Mill site be looked at again when the council's capital programme and budget is considered in January. Members felt the project should not be dealt with in isolation.
The site was purchased by the borough council in March and the plan is to open up the riverside to public access.
Funding for the £155,000, scheme which includes repairing the chimney, which is a listed structure, and removing corrugated sheds, is expected to come from European 5b and the council's Waitrose receipt.
The cyclepath will form part of the Sustrans National Cycle Network.
It was recommended by the council's strategic development committee earlier this month that funds from the Waitrose receipt be allocated to the work
But Cllr Nick Waterhouse said last week there were a lot of projects planned for Okehampton and in the borough which needed to be looked at together before a decision could be made funding.
Economic development manager for the borough council Tim Beavon said the European funding would still be available until September next year so putting the project back was not a big problem.
'We have to get planning permission for the scheme anyway so it will be January/February time before we could do anything,' he said.
