OKEHAMPTON Table Tennis Club celebrated its tenth year since the centre started in April, 2001 with a special, friendly tournament between the club and a team from Poole in Dorset.
The chairman of the Poole club is Colin McLean, who was one of the original founders of the Okehampton club in Castle Street. Colin was its first chairman with Fred Phillips as vice-chairman and Fred went on to become chairman when Colin moved away to Dorset.
For the last five years both clubs have competed for the Ron Venton Cup, a tournament held bi-annually, in memory of another founder member who died. The West Devon side have been fortunate to win the cup five out of the last six years.
Fred told the Times: 'The standard of play is always excellent with high standard players in the top teams and beginners to intermediate players in the lower teams. This year there were six groups each having six players a group and all very evenly matched.
'The outcome was 40-32 games to Okehampton, so we hold on to the cup for another year. The opposition put up a really good game and everyone had a fantastic day, whether they were playing or watching.'
'If anyone is interested in starting to play again after years away from the game you will be more than welcome to come and have a game. If you are a beginner, young or old, there are standards for all ages.'
