Newton Abbot 15

A LAST minute penalty from fly half Richard Poustie salvaged an undeserved point for visitors Newton Abbot — Okes' dressing room was like a morgue compared with their jubilant opponents.

Yet again missed chances from failing to make the easy pass or driving on once too often instead of moving the ball allowed Okes to be charitable hosts.

The forwards produced good quick ball, attacks were varied and Okes dominated the first half. But all they had to show for it was a sole Alford try, which was cancelled out by Castleton.

The second period was much of the same though Newton Abbot managed to stay competitive mainly due to man of the match, former Exeter star, Southern. He was the main thorn in Okes' side, repeatedly making tackles or snapping up loose ball.

His work-rate and skill were testimony to his fitness and commitment and all of Okes young players would be wise to follow his

example.

The visitors scored against the run of play to go 12-5 up, then after numerous raids on the visitors, Searle kicked a penalty.

He followed it up with a try and conversion after catching the visitors' defence napping at a penalty.

At 15-12 to Okes, with ten minutes to play, there came the charity act by not killing the game off.

Credit must go to both sides for their commitment and willingness to open the game up. The match was physical, exciting and all one would want from league rugby.
