OKEHAMPTON'S off-piste jogging club has moved its route to Meldon after concern from English Heritage about potentially large numbers of people running around the town's castle. Organiser of the off-piste joggers Tony Rudall said: 'English Heritage were, quite rightly, a little upset about me encouraging rather more people than I had originally indicated to run around the castle. It is also, undoubtedly, unwise to traverse the castle walls, even though they are only six inches off the ground.' During the May Bank Holiday, the group completed a circuitous off-piste run from the car park just off the quarry road above Meldon viaduct. Participants jogged across the bridge and down a bank to the river. A long uphill slog then took them to the reservoir where they clambered down to the river again, waded across it, then ascended the 189 steps beside the dam on the other side. The feat ended with a rock traverse in the quarry — going no more than a foot or so above the ground. For more information on the group and its activities, please call him on 01409 221848.
