THE interesting collection of tools and rural paraphernalia carefully set out on the Okehampton Hamlets stand certainly captured the imagination of many visitors to Okehampton Show.
The idea of the quiz was to identify the purpose of each item and some very innovative uses were proffered. One was that of a blade being the required tool for ?dressing? the lead beading on stained glass windows, but in fact was a ?castrating tool . . .?
The collection was assembled by council chairman Derek Webber and proved a popular exercise with a broad cross-section of visitors. The winner was Mrs B Letchford, of Limehayes Road, Okehampton, who had 19 correct answers and won a bottle of whisky.
She was closely followed by two other entrants who notched up 18 correct answers and so it is a compliment to a continuing broad knowledge of rural items, obviously based on the rich and diverse agriculture heritage of the area.
The competition was part of Okehampton Hamlets Parish Council?s aim to raise its profile and highlight to the resident population there is a body through which their concerns can be heard.
The council meets monthly on the first Tuesday, with those meetings open to those electors in the Hamlets who want to raise issues concerning the area and how improvements can be introduced bringing about a better lifestyle for those who live in the area.
The next meeting is on Tuesday, September 7, at 7.30pm in the town hall.
