IT WAS very interesting to read about the activities of the Men of the Trees in Tavistock 20 years ago (Letters by Mrs Jean Metcalf and others).
Since its foundation in Kenya in 1922 the charity has been working to re-tree the planet, inspiring and carrying out literally millions of new plantings. The only change is that it is now called the International Tree Foundation (ITF).
Last year, ITF donated over a thousand young trees for new clumps on Tavistock Golf Course whilst, in Plymouth, we are working with others to set up a tree warden network. There is, of course, much more to do ? both locally to replace Tavistock?s ageing trees for the sake of the town?s character and across the world in arid lands where life itself depends on trees to hold soil together and provide firewood and fruit.
