ABOUT eleven years have passed since I attended a meeting of the town council on the subject of the war memorial. The war memorial was supposed to be placed in the church grounds but unfortunately there were insufficient funds for the purpose. That is why the memorial is in situ where it is. The town council didn't seem to be concerned about this matter at all. However, a referendum was heard in the town to see what the town's people thought of it and the vote was 83% in favour. The town council has dragged its feet about this matter and nothing has been done at all. Is the council hoping this matter will be forgotten? This being the hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the First World War you would think the council would have thought of this matter. It is to Tavistock Town Council's shame that the people who made the ultimate sacrifice are commemorated on a monument sited between a car park and a public toilet. Roddie Meredith Tavistock
