Devon two League North Tawton 20 St Columba/Torpoint 20 A DRAW was probably the fair result for this match on Saturday in which neither side was able to establish any dominance. North Tawton set up an early attack and might have scored from a maul on the St Columba try line but could not force their way through; they were penalised and pushed back. The mauling game was working well for Tawton to put further pressure on St Columba. From about 40 metres out Tawton?s full back David Fewings struck a clean penalty to open the scoring. St Columba/Torpoint showed some flair in their three-quarter play but were unable to capitalise on it due to some good defensive work by the home side, notably a try saving tackle by Tawton centre Mike Symons. Shortly afterwards they did break through but the score was disallowed for a double movement on the touch down. Having weathered this attack Tawton came back well with scrum half Chris Martin having a good game and sniping round the edges of the scrum to disrupt the opposition ball. Two more penalties were conceded by St Columba. Both the kicks were from distance but David Fewings had no trouble with them and pushed the score on to nine - nil to the home side. The later part of the half was dominated by St Columba attacking the Tawton end. Good defensive cover by Tawton kept them from the line, once again Mike Symons and Alfie May in the action for Tawton. Finally the pressure told and St Columba worked a gap for their full back Lewis Rodney to cut through for the first try, converted by Phil Bennett. In the closing minutes of the half Tawton were awarded another penalty and Fewings slotted a good long-range kick to give Tawton a 12-7 lead at the break. The start of the second period saw a substitution by North Tawton as new player James Le Grys came on to replace Mike Symons. St Columba started the second half much better and within minutes centre Phil Bennett had converted a penalty to cut North Tawton?s lead to two points. They continued putting the pressure on and from a tapped free kick set up a good threes move. A pass slipped by centre Bennett to his fly half Dave Sibson broke the Tawton defence for St Columba?s second try. This was converted and the visitors led 12-17. North Tawton came back well and a determined break by Simon Quick gained territory so that the penalty awarded against St Columba soon after was in range for Fewings to slot his fifth place kick from 30 metres, and regain the lead for the home side. St Columba lost a bit of composure and gave away penalties and this allowed Tawton to penetrate to the opposition?s 10 metre line. From here a scrum was taken against the head by Tawton?s front row and a driving maul piled over the line, beneath which Tawton?s Steve King grounded the ball for a try. The conversion was missed but Tawton had edged into a 20-17 lead. The final phase of the match saw an extraordinary sequence of penalty opportunities in favour of St Columba but Tawton held on to the draw.
