IN these times of Health and Safety considerations Derriford Hospital should be commended on their attitude to smoking shown by the number of signs outside, proclaiming that 'Derriford Hospital is a Non-Smoking Site'.

Sadly, this innovation has failed to deter the hardcore smokers who like other segments of the public continue to flout the law. Whilst I was at the bus stop outside the hospital the other day, I observed several persons openly smoking in the vicinity, one of whom was sitting right under one of the aforementioned signs! If only I'd had my camera. Naturally I challenged some of them, and the replies I received (the polite ones) were to say the least, imaginative.

'I hate do-gooders,' said one man . . . 'Everyone else is doing it,' said a lady.

Faced with this logic, I gave up my one-man crusade.

Is it not a shame that, having spent a considerable amount on these signs, there is not some authorative presence able to enforce the implementation of this law?
