SENTIMENTAL and valuable items have been stolen from a vehicle parked at Brentor Car Park — making it the ninth substantial break-in at that location in recent months.
On Sunday, July 14 between 3.15pm and 4.15pm the rear window of the targeted vehicle was smashed and valuable items were stolen, which included a Michael Kors rose gold watch, house and car keys, pearl earrings, bracelet, necklace and money.
The owner thought they had safely hidden a handbag out of sight but police want to remind people to take all valuable belongings with them when they leave their vehicle.
In total, 39 thefts from vehicles have occurred in Tavistock this year and Brentor Car Park has been hit the hardest.
Despite there being a 60% drop in vehicle crime in the West Devon and Dartmoor area compared to last year, police are keen to highlight issues surrounding Brentor Car Park.
A spokesperson for Tavistock police said: ‘We ask that motorists do not leave anything of value in their cars, particularly when unattended in isolated locations.
‘The tourist season is approaching and people need to be aware of what’s left on view in their vehicles. We are putting up signs and posters to let people know and to be aware of theft but thieves are taking them down.
‘Thieves target cars parked on Dartmoor over the tourist season as people believe that it’s the most safe place to leave their belongings.
‘Officers have been tasked to patrol likely locations when possible and warn motorists and issue leaflets. These leaflets can be left on display inside a vehicle to say there is nothing to steal!’
If anyone has information on the theft on July 14, contact Tavistock police on 101 quoting crime reference number CR/062864/19.
Top tips to prevent opportunists from targeting your vehicle include:
