NOW that we have a lovely play area in Simmonds Park for the children I would like to ask Christine Marsh, in her capacity as councillor and mayor of Okehampton, what is going to be done to protect our children — and this play area — from the number of dogs that are being allowed to run riot in this part of the park?

At the weekend I took my ten and nine-year-old children to play in the new park. In the half-hour that we were there, there were five dogs at one given time running off their leads around all the young children.

One of these dogs, whose owner had absolutely no control over it whatsoever, jumped up at both my children while they were on the swings. The owner told them he was only playing! Try telling that to my frightened daughter after that dog left an extremely bad mark on her leg with its claws. I now have to coax her over to the park to play.

I thought this area was for the benefit of our children and not for the dogs. It is only gong to be a matter of time before one of these dogs attacks a young child , doing severe damage.

Now that the park has been made to look lovely, is it not a shame that these dogs are being allowed to spoil our enjoyment of it?
