PRINCETOWN Horticultural Society is holding an official opening day for its community allotment on Saturday, September 12.

The society, made up of a small group of people, started discussions in February with Princetown United Church about using a piece of land to the side of the church for the allotments.

The community allotment will consist of two garden beds, a raised bed for people with disabilities, a rockery, a compost bin built out of pallets and wooden flooring to edge garden beds.

A local garage has also provided a great supply of used tyres in which to grow potatoes.

The group is affiliated with the Royal Horticultural Society and has aims and objectives for the next twelve months which will include seed sharing, visitors and speakers once a month, and day visits to gardens.

Princetown Horticultural Society also hopes to teach local children where fruit and vegetables come from.

Dawn Wood, a member of the group, said: ‘We are calling out for more members as we are expanding. With the kindness of a resident of Princetown we can clear their garden and put our polytunnel there, so we can bring our plants on through winter — as most people appreciate, it can be unpredictable on the moors.

‘If anyone from the surrounding area would like to join us, come to our official opening day on Saturday, September 12, between 11am and 3pm.

‘We are also holding a table top sale if anyone is interested in selling their goods.’

The open day will be held at Princetown United Church, Tor Royal Lane, Princetown, opposite the Fox Tor Café car park.

There will also be children’s activities.

Refreshments will be available and there will other activities going on throughout the day.
