A RECENTLY formed partnership between Okehampton Community Education Department and the University of the Third Age (U3A) is promising to create many new learning opportunities for people over 50 in the area.

The Okehampton U3A was formed last September to promote the sharing of education, leisure and recreation interests and experiences, and meets every two months.

The group was recently visited by community education officer Christine Munkenbeck, who talked about organising free, six week taster courses in subjects of the members' choice.

The idea was well received and over 40 different subjects were listed.

By running taster courses, it is hoped new interest groups will be started and the U3A would like to invite people along to its next meeting at the Ockment Centre on July 31 at 2.30pm to get a glimpse of what is on offer.

The first courses to be organised are: themed Dartmoor walks, stress relieving yoga, discovering family history, photo manipulation using the computer, building a website from scratch and basic computing.

All these courses will run on weekdays from August.

Mrs Munkenbeck can be contacted on 01837 53800 for more information or if you want to find out more about the U3A contact Bob Jeffrey on 01837 52081.
