THE £280,000 refurbishment of Tavistock Town Council?s Drake Road building has finally been completed, with staff due to move back into the premises this week.

The up-dating programme was sparked by health and safety legislation and disability access laws which came into force this year.

The work included installation of a fire escape from the top floor, a lift for disabled access, a disabled toilet and a new door for wheelchair access from the car park area. A new fire alarm system and fire protection measures such as doors and fire lobbies have been installed. The building has also been redecorated throughout.

Town clerk Roger Howard said: ?We?ve had the lighting, which wasn?t quite Victorian with candles, but was almost as bad, upgraded to modern standards.

?The cupola on the roof was taken down and virtually replaced, the inside of the roof cavity has had additional fire precautions and there was a certain amount of re-tiling and lead work done, because the rain was getting in quite considerably before.?

Col Howard hoped the move back into Drake Road, from the current office accommodation in Duke Street, would take about three days.
