AN innovative new £340,000 housing development has been opened in Spreyton by local housing provider West Devon Homes.
The estate, called Daveys Platt, will provide urgently needed affordable housing for families in the area.
A West Devon Homes spokesperson said: ?The project is the result of the hard work, commitment and persistence of Spreyton Parish Council, which, with the assistance of the Community Council of Devon, organised a Community Appraisal in 1999.
?The outcome found that people were leaving the village due to the lack of affordable housing options.?
The appraisal led to plans for the construction of Daveys Platt, which received a tremendous boost after a local landowner stepped in to offer reasonably priced land for development of the scheme.
West Devon Borough Council, in association with the Housing Corporation, provided grant funding of £170,000 and West Devon Homes secured private funding to ensure completion of the
development.
Daveys Platt is designated an exceptions site under National Planning Policy, meaning that the properties must provide homes solely for local families.
There are other affordable housing schemes planned after the opening of the Spreyton development, including some currently under construction in Tavistock, Lifton and Okehampton.
West Devon Homes can be contacted for more information on any of the developments on 01822 813770.
