TAVISTOCK will welcome a new curate to work alongside the Prebendary John Rawlings next month.
Joanna Abecassis will be ordained this Sunday (June 30) at Exeter Cathedral and will take part in her first service at St Eustachius Church in Tavistock the following Sunday.
Mr Rawlings said he was looking forward to working with the new curate: 'I hope that she will be happy here and I am sure she will be made to feel very welcome by the parishioners.'
He said Tavistock had a good reputation in the Diocese of Exeter for being a training parish, which offered young curates valuable experience.
Miss Abecassis comes to Tavistock from Bristol where she has been training for the past three years.
Clergy in the Church of England generally serve as deacons for one year before being ordained priest, after which they are given wider responsibilities and can preside at holy communion.
Some members of the parish will attend Exeter Cathedral on Sunday, to see Miss Abecassis be ordained as a Church of England deacon by the Bishop of Exeter, the Rt Rev Michael Langrish.
