AFTER nearly 20 years of meeting in a temporary hut a new 'youth wing' is being provided for Chagford Youth Club to use at the local primary school.
The new building, which will also be used by the playgroup and mother and toddler group, is being funded to the tune of £150,000 by Devon County Council and will go up in March next year.
In the meantime the youth club is planning to raise money to buy new equipment for the premises and is appealing for donations for its auction on May 19.
Youth leader Glynne Miller said the club was not eligible for any significant grants because it had no members over 14 years of age.
'We have to resort to fundraising on a regular basis,' she said.
'Because all our equipment is either old or second-hand we would like some new items that would befit a new building.'
Between 20 and 30 young people between the ages of eight and 13 attend the club each Friday during school term time.
Mrs Miller said some just came to 'hang out' with their friends while others used all the equipment provided.
'What we would really like is a new pool table because the present one is ripped, table tennis tables and table football,' she said.
'If we have enough money we would also like to purchase some outside equipment because we have use of the school grounds.'
Mrs Miller hopes that when the youth wing is built the popular youth club may increase to two evenings a week.
